Relationship to Place — Traveling with Respect

To travel well is not just to arrive somewhere new.

It is to understand how to be there.

Introduction

There is a growing awareness that the way we travel matters.

For a long time, travel has been shaped by consumption: moving through places quickly, taking in experiences, and leaving with little consideration for the deeper impact on the land or the people who live there.

But there is another way to move through the world.

One rooted in respect, reciprocity, and relationship.

Being a Guest

At the core of this approach is a simple shift in perspective.

You are not arriving as a consumer.

You are arriving as a guest.

This changes everything.

It affects how you move, how you listen, and how you engage with both people and place.

It invites a level of humility that is often missing in modern travel.

Moving Beyond Extraction

Much of global travel operates on an extractive model.

Experiences are packaged, optimized, and delivered with efficiency.

What is often lost in that process is relationship.

To travel with respect means stepping out of that pattern.

It means asking different questions:

How do we engage without taking more than we give?

How do we show up in a way that honors the integrity of a place?

How do we avoid turning culture into something to be consumed?

In Mongolia, life is still deeply shaped by the land.

Pilgrimage as a Modern Healing Practice

In a world defined by speed, noise, and constant input, there is a growing pull toward something older, quieter, and more essential.

Introduction

For most of human history, pilgrimage was not a niche spiritual activity. It was a fundamental way people made sense of their lives.

People walked. They crossed landscapes. They left the familiar behind in search of clarity, healing, or connection to something larger than themselves.

Today, that instinct has not disappeared. It has simply been buried under convenience, distraction, and the illusion that everything we need can be found without ever leaving where we are.

And yet, more than ever, people are feeling the call to step away.

What Pilgrimage Actually Is

Pilgrimage is not tourism.

It is not about checking places off a list or moving quickly through a landscape.

It is movement with intention.

A pilgrimage creates a container where something can shift. The combination of physical movement, unfamiliar environment, and focused attention begins to reorganize how we relate to ourselves and the world around us.

There is a reason this pattern exists across cultures and throughout history. It works.

The Role of Land

In modern life, we often treat the environment as background.

On pilgrimage, the land becomes an active participant.

Vastness, silence, and exposure to elemental conditions begin to strip away the layers we carry in everyday life. Without constant stimulation, something more fundamental starts to surface.

Clarity doesn’t come from adding more information. It comes from creating the conditions where we can actually hear ourselves again.

Movement as a Reset

There is also something essential about moving through space.

Whether walking, riding, or traveling across open landscapes, the act of moving forward has a direct effect on the nervous system.

It creates rhythm. It creates space.

It allows the body to process what the mind often cannot resolve on its own.

Not a Tour — A Different Kind of Journey

There are many ways to travel through a place.

This is not one of them.

Introduction

Most travel is designed around movement without depth.

You arrive. You see. You move on.

Even many retreats, while meaningful in their own way, take place in controlled environments.

These journeys are built differently.

Observation vs Participation

Tourism is based on observation.

You are outside the experience, looking in.

Here, the orientation shifts toward participation.

You are not just witnessing a place. You are in relationship with it.

This means time spent with local communities, not as spectators, but as guests.

It means engaging with practices, landscapes, and traditions in a way that invites presence rather than distance.It means tracking our inner experience.

The Container

Each journey is intentionally designed as a small, contained experience.

Group sizes are limited.

There is space for individual experience, but also for shared reflection and integration.

This creates a different dynamic than large group travel.

It allows for depth, responsiveness, and a level of care that is difficult to achieve at scale.

Role of Facilitation

These are not self-guided trips.

They are held experiences.

Facilitation is woven throughout the journey — not in a rigid or overly structured way, but as a steady presence that helps orient the group and support what emerges.

This includes somatic and contemplative practices, as well as simple moments of reflection and integration.

The goal is not to control the experience, but to create the conditions where something meaningful can unfold.

Collaboration with Local Guides

A key part of what makes these journeys possible is the depth of relationship with local collaborators.

Guides, artists, teachers, and community members are not added elements.

They are central to the experience.

Their knowledge, presence, and connection to the land shape the journey in ways that cannot be replicated through standard travel models.

Integration and Reflection

In most travel, there is little space to process what you are experiencing.

The pace keeps moving.

Here, time is built in for integration.

Through daily check-ins, shared conversation, and moments of stillness, participants are able to absorb what they are encountering, rather than simply moving past it.

Is it a retreat?

Why I Keep Returning to Mongolia

Brandt Miller reflects on his connection to Mongolia and how years of returning, learning, and relationships led to the creation of Steppe & Soul.

Opening

There are places we visit, and there are places that change the direction of our lives.

For me, Mongolia has always been the latter.

What began as a study abroad experience in 2006—an interest in Tibetan Buddhism, remote landscapes, and the cultures of the region—became something I didn’t fully understand at the time. A kind of recognition. A sense that this place would continue to call me back.

The First Return

After that first experience, returning wasn’t a decision so much as a pull.

Over the years, I found myself coming back again and again—first through a Fulbright scholarship, then through documentary work, and eventually through relationships that deepened over time.

What changed was not just my understanding of Mongolia, but my relationship to it.

It stopped being a place I visited and became a place I was in relationship with.

Relationship Over Time

Many of the people I met in those early years are still part of my life today.

Host families became close friends. Guides became collaborators. Conversations turned into shared experiences that continued across years, not just moments.

This is something that can’t be created quickly. It develops over time—through presence, through listening, and through returning.

The Work Evolving

Alongside this, my work as a facilitator was also evolving.

I was drawn to approaches that focused less on fixing and more on creating space—space for people to come into contact with their own experience in a deeper way.

Somatic work, group process, and relational approaches all began to converge.

But something was still missing.

The Missing Piece

That missing piece was place.

In Mongolia, I began to see how landscape itself could shape experience.

The scale of the land, the rhythm of daily life, the absence of constant stimulation—these created conditions where something different could happen.

People slowed down. Attention shifted. What was underneath began to surface.

It wasn’t something I was doing. It was something that emerged through the combination of land, culture, and experience.

Pilgrimage

Across cultures and time, people have stepped away from their normal lives and moved through land in search of clarity, healing, and reconnection.

In that sense, pilgrimage isn’t something new. It’s one of the oldest ways we have of reorienting ourselves.

What I began to recognize is that these journeys weren’t retreats in the traditional sense, and they weren’t travel either.

They were something closer to pilgrimage—a way of moving with intention, in relationship to place and experience.

Working as a Guest

One thing that has remained constant is the understanding that I am always a guest in Mongolia.

That shapes everything.

It means listening more than directing. Learning rather than assuming. Building relationships slowly rather than trying to create something quickly.

It also means that the work is never just mine. It is shaped by the people who are part of it.

Steppe & Soul

Steppe & Soul grew out of this intersection.

Years of returning. Years of relationships. Years of facilitation work.

Not as a concept, but as something that naturally emerged from what was already happening.

The intention is simple: to create spaces where people can step out of the structures of their everyday lives and come into a different kind of relationship—with themselves, with others, and with the natural world.

What People Experience

What people take from these journeys is often difficult to put into words.

But there are common threads.

A sense of reconnection. A shift in perspective. A return to something more essential.

Not as a dramatic transformation, but as something quieter and more lasting.
